Shade comparison

Four to eight shades, measured.

Crowns and fillings do not whiten. Where they show, we whiten first and replace them two weeks later to match.

What it is

Teeth Whitening

Whitening works by allowing a peroxide gel to break down the pigment molecules that have accumulated inside your enamel and dentine over years of coffee, tea, red fruit and time.

Done under supervision, it is safe, predictable and measurable. Done from a kit bought online, it is a lottery with your gums and your enamel — ill-fitting trays leak gel onto soft tissue, and unregulated concentrations cause the sensitivity that gives whitening its reputation.

We measure your starting shade on a calibrated scale, protect the gums, and desensitise before and after. Most patients lift four to eight shades and keep it for eighteen months.

The process

What actually happens.

4 stages over 1 visit, or 14 nights at home.

  1. 01

    Assessment & clean

    45 min

We check for decay, exposed root surfaces and existing restorations — crowns and fillings do not whiten — and remove surface staining first.

  2. 02

    Shade record

    15 min

Starting shade photographed against the VITA scale under standardised light. This is what your result is measured from.

  3. 03

    Treatment

    90 min or 14 nights

In-clinic: gum barrier placed, three gel cycles under isolation. At home: custom trays worn overnight for two weeks.

  4. 04

    Result & maintenance

    20 min

Final shade recorded, top-up gel supplied, and a short list of what to avoid for the first forty-eight hours while the enamel rehydrates.

Why it is worth it

What you actually get.

01

Measured, not guessed

Start and finish shades are recorded on the VITA scale under calibrated light, so the result is a number you can see rather than an impression.

02

Sensitivity managed in advance

A desensitising protocol runs before and after treatment. Most patients report none at all; a minority get a day of twinges.

03

Gums stay protected

A cured barrier isolates the soft tissue completely — the part that off-the-shelf trays cannot do.

04

Two routes to the same place

One clinic session, or fourteen nights at home in custom trays. Same result; the difference is how quickly you want it.

Technology

The equipment behind it.

Inside the lab

Philips Zoom WhiteSpeed

LED-accelerated in-clinic system with variable intensity, so the protocol adapts to how your teeth respond during the session.

Custom-milled trays

Made from your digital scan with a reservoir profile, so gel stays on enamel and off gum.

VITA shade calibration

Objective shade measurement under a fixed light temperature rather than a judgement made in whatever light the room has.

Cross-polarised photography

Before and after images taken without surface glare, so the comparison shows the actual colour change.

Afterwards

What the next fortnight looks like.

  1. First 48 hours

Enamel is temporarily porous. Avoid coffee, tea, red wine, curry and berries — the so-called white diet.

  2. First week

Any sensitivity settles. The shade lightens slightly further as the teeth rehydrate.

  3. Months 6 — 12

A single top-up night with the trays we supplied is usually enough to reset the shade.

  4. Ongoing

Hygiene visits every six months do more for the colour of your teeth than any product you can buy.

Questions

The things people ask.

Something not covered here? Ask us directly — we answer every enquiry within one working day.

Supervised whitening at regulated concentrations does not. It works on pigment inside the tooth, not on the mineral structure. The damage associated with whitening comes almost entirely from unregulated products and badly fitting trays.
Starting shade and the cause of the discolouration both matter. Yellow-toned staining from food and drink responds very well; grey tones from tetracycline or from a tooth that has had a root canal respond slowly and sometimes need a different approach entirely.
No. Ceramic and composite hold whatever shade they were made in. If you have visible restorations at the front, we whiten first, wait two weeks for the shade to stabilise, then replace them to match.
Around eighteen months for most patients, shorter if you drink a lot of coffee or tea, longer if you do not. A top-up night once or twice a year maintains it indefinitely.
They reach the same place. In-clinic gets you there in ninety minutes; at home takes two weeks and tends to produce slightly less sensitivity. Many patients do the clinic session and keep the trays for maintenance.
